What does
the AR Program teach our Children?
How
many parents sit down and read through the
AR Books that are sent home with our
children? You may ask yourself... why would
I read a book that the School District has
deemed Okay for children to read? If it is a
book that is short enough for your child to
read during "Gator Class", then you may not
even have the opportunity to see the books
your child reads.
Why is
GulfCoastParents addressing this issue?
Because all parents need to be aware of the
reading material that Our School District &
The Renaissance Learning Program feel our
Children should be reading AND testing on.
The
following two examples have been discussed
with the Principal at Gautier Middle School
and with Mrs. Sarah Maghan... YET they
continue to remain on the shelves for our
children to check out.
A.
"Give
A Boy A Gun" by Todd Strasser
- This book goes into
detail where two heavily armed boys attend a
school dance with the sole intent of
torturing and killing their fellow students.
The story depicts taunting and violence...
all of which is ignored by the school staff.
Throughout the book the Author refers back
to the students suicide note.
(This may or may not be a book you would
like your child to read... but NO child
should have to take an AR Test where they
have to remember facts about students being
tortured and shot. Nor should they have to
test on a teenagers suicide note.)
B.
"What
My Mother Doesn't Know" by Sonya Sones
- This book is about
a Middle School (14-year-old) female and
entries she writes in her diary. The only
good thing I can say about this book is that
the title fits the contents. As parents we
try and teach our children morals, we
discuss the importance of protecting their
reputation, and we try to keep them away
from sexual situations for as long as we
can. IT SEEMS our schools have other
motives. Instead of explaining more about
this book, I would like you to read a few
"entries"... (By the way... Dylan is her
boyfriend, Chaz is the boy she is 'dating'
online but has never met in person, and
Murphy is the boys she ends up with... AND
SHE IS ONLY 14)
1.
Ice Capades - Sometimes on
chilly nights I stand close to my bedroom
window, unbutton my nightgown, and press my
breasts against the cold glass just so I can
see the amazing trick that my nipples can
do.
2.
Walking Home From School With Rachel And
Grace - Listening to Grace moan about how
horny she is and about how if she doesn't
find a boyfriend soon she's going to die of
lackonookie disease... (this entry goes on)
3. It's
That Time Of The Month Again - I wore my
brand-new satin panties to school today. So,
naturally I got my period. When Rachel gets
hers, she calls it riding the cotton pony.
Grace calls it surfing the crimson wave. But
I prefer to think of it as rebooting my
ovarian operating system.
4.
Shower - I step into the steam
and let the water rinse my body clean while
rivers flow in ribbons down my arms and
waterfalls caress my breasts and swirl in
lazy trickles to my thighs as soap melts
into creamy suds that slide across my skin
like foaming clouds, and all the while I'm
thinking about Chaz, imagining he's with me
in this mist, imagining he's WITH me...
5.
Deleted - Tonight Chaz asked me: "What's
your favorite thing to do?" I wasn't sure
what to say so I just wrote back: "I don't
know. What's yours?" He's not real quick at
typing, but I had to wait even longer than
usual for his answer to pop up onto my
screen: "I like to jerk off in Libraries."
(this entry goes on)
6.
Second Stop: Shopping In Filene's Bargain
Basement WITHOUT My Mother - I just found
the most outrageous lime green panties with
these little squiggly things that look just
like sperm swimming all over them.
(This
book also has words such as Son Of A B***H
and God D***.)
I am
not sure how other parents feel... but in
reading JUST these six entries... I wonder
what type of AR Questions our Children have
to answer?

"PSD" has been understanding and our
